Books

I am interested in the book and the space it provides as both a conceptual system and material object. The books I produce follow internal thought processes in response to external language. They materialise often unseen elements of the reading, writing, or thinking process in order to explore ways sense might be sought and constructed.

As an artist I use elements of drawing, photography and writing as a way of materialising language and exploring thought processes. I am interested in the hierarchical tension between process and product. My PhD research explores the disruption of sense-making through materialising less visible actions around thinking, reading, writing, and speaking. This enables an interrogation of the ways we construct meaning and the things that become lost in the act of communication. The gaps and spaces as well as the deleted or forgotten are as much of interest as the object of language itself.

Lines of Flight forces together two contradictory systems: the rhizome and the book. A diagrammatic drawing has been produced which follows a response to the writings of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in relation to the rhizome. The drawn page has been physically fragmented, and thrust into the paginated structure of the book. Lines of Flight is part of AMBruno's [sic] collection.

Reading Words by Rachel Smith is a material exploration of the thought processes that occur simultaneously while reading. In reading Jean-Paul Sartre’s book Words the original narrative becomes interrupted by the thoughts and distractions, following Roland Barthes' notion of the smitten and insolent reader. Reading Words is part of AMBruno's words collection.
