Books

I have worked in magazine publishing since my early 20's, so it is part of my making process. The books I have made to date are an extension of projects that I am working on, a visual discovery using different print processes and approaches. Photography is the ideal medium for reproduction in books, which I have used to explore notions of movement, stillness and cataloguing. This included a text-only book about spam emails. I tend to make books in an edition of 25. I have used both online publishing sites and handmade books, depending on the project, often referencing old books that have a specific resonance to me.

Short films

There is a house on the water to which I frequently return. In a series of four films, spread across the seasons, the birds will swoop, the reeds will move, the rain will lash, the light will sparkle, die and alight again: perhaps a drama may unfurl - perhaps a cycle of nature, a cycle of life.

Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill is an artist who uses photography.

For the last few years she has worked on a series of projects which have examined components of place in relation to such diverse topographies as nuclear sites in the UK; private dwellings and landscapes charged with both public history and personal memory; astronomical observatories in North and South America; and finally vestiges of the sublime in the natural world.

Beside installations and wall-mounted pictures, she produces book works which explore variations in movement, stillness and repetition.

In The Beginning is part of AMBruno's [sic] collection. This book/object relates to the biblical account of the creation of the universe. The book quotes from Genesis the Hebrew word Beresheit (in the beginning) and through its physicality and its asymmetry refers to and questions its own making.

Carbon Copy is part of AMBruno's words collection. My cousin recently handed me a folder of documents containing typed and written fragments of my father’s life. They make up a time line, moving from father to daughter, composed of various words photographed from these papers; copies of copies, all sequenced through the reproduction of language, media and meaning.

Sanguine Shifts by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, Sanguine Shifts

Sanguine Shifts is part of AMBruno's Red collection. This photo-book pictures encounters with this dangerous colour set loose in the field of this photographer’s vision. On the changing coloured ground there are enumerations from the lived and living world: lava flows; startling earth from Rwanda; the caped leather seat of a Havana taxi; and a bubbling sulphur-rich caldera from Chile.

All About Eve? All About My Mother by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, All About Eve? All About My Mother (2014)
C-type colour photograph

All About Eve? All About My Mother is part of AMBruno's Stills collection of limited edition prints. I have restaged my mother's favourite film, All About Eve, with my youngest daughter and mother, so as to create some effectual tension between them. Taking the film's theme where an apparent ingenue insinuates herself into the company of an established, but ageing actress I have re-imagined the film's narrative.

Dark Energy Fills My Sails: Observatory Time by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, Dark Energy Fills My Sails: Observatory Time
Edition of 25 books, signed and numbered. Indigo prints, hand sewn and bound.

Dark Energy Fills My Sails: Observatory Time is part of AMBruno's Lists etc. collection. The pictures in this book were made in response to the inauguration of the Dark Energy Survey in 2012, which will attempt to chart the origins and nature of 'dark energy'. The presence of the colour-inverted images is an attempt to refigure the unknown nature of this phenomenon, presenting it as a more structured, time based phenomena. The Dark Energy Camera is situated inside the dome of the Blanco Telescope, Chile, which appears as a point of reference in several photographs.

Sprite Strike Strike Sprite by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, Sprite Strike Strike Sprite (2013)
Edition of 25. Two photographs in case binding.

NGC 297 (New General Catalogue) is part of AMBruno's I'm telling you stories. Trust me collection of limited edition prints. This print, apparently, of NGC 297 was recently found in a cabinet belonging to the astronomer E.E. Barnard. It shows an irregular nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. The discoverer of the print has subsequently denied that the image was created by the impact of a gull on a glass plate.

Sprite Strike Strike Sprite is part of AMBruno's Lines collection. Amorphous things - formless things - carry their own charge, one which only declares itself in brief moments of paroxysm or impact which are rarely seen. Sprites - in physics - are just such phenomena, but suppose they were animate beings, shy of showing their plasmic lives... Would we recognise them?

Sixteen Hands High by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, Sixteen Hands High (2013)
40pp. French fold binding. 90 x 217 mm. Edition of 25. Made by Book Works, London.

Sixteen Hands High is aprt of AMBruno's 16 collection. Galloping through the horizontal pages - paper streaked with black ink - the photographed polo ponies move across framing bands of vision. Movement through stillness pushes the photographic image, making visible such fleeting moments and proposing mutant visions.

Contingencies of Light by Judy Goldhill

Judy Goldhill, Contingencies of Light: Dark, the Darkest I Dare to Go (2012)
32pp. Digitally printed onto Mohawk 148gsm. Hardback blocked cover.
204 x 275mm. Edition of 25. Made by Book Works, London.

Contingencies of Light: Dark, the darkest I dare to go is part of AMBruno's Black Circle collection. By this shaft, in a journey, grains of light are scattered and gathered, condensed, the sum and sun of darkness is cast as light, through the holes of these telescopes on a sky island. A publication of photographs on a vertical journey of discovery through telescopes and dust. Text by David Alan Mellor.

Judy Goldhill, Broken by Saying This
as received by J.R. GOLDHILL
(2011)
Hard back book. 150 x 110mm.

Revenant is part of AMBruno's One-Fold Books collection. A negative bag, half full of the film it has always contained; folded and left with only the chemical residue of the processing deposited on the enclosing paper - a trace of what it once held. The stored negatives are variations of an art directed group of corporate businessmen, photographed in the early 1980's. Then supermen; now with their magnitude eroded, they have faded from negative presences to waning ghosts, revenants from that age of financial exuberance.

Broken by Saying This is part of AMBruno's Blue collection. An anthology of received emails. Designed and bound by Book Works, London.
